Now that I've gotten my mits on an Intel Macbook I've also started dabbling with Parallels Desktop, a piece of software that'll let you run a whole bunch of virtual machines inside Mac OS X. For my work it's rather handy to have a spare Solaris system lying around, so I went with the Solaris Express image that I mentioned a few weeks ago. And now that it's about time for me to get started on my LPIC-2 exam it's also handy to have at least one Linux at hand.
Enter a pre-installed and configured Fedora Core 6 image for Parallels. At only ~730MB in size that really isn't that bad. Saves me a lot of trouble as well.
Just be sure to set your RAM at 512 MB. Any higher is supposed to crash FC, according to this OS X hint.
EDIT:
Tried it with my last day of the Parallels demo. It works like a charm :)

Hey Martijn :)
Currently I'm running Fedora and Solaris Express (which apparently is the testbed for Solaris 11) in Parallels. And I'm trying to get a Win98 CD for some old games of mine.
But I'm glad to see you like the software :)

Hey dude,
Can you tell me which Linux distros and books you used for your LPIC exams?
Thanks.

RE: LPI certification
Well, for the LPI-1 I used two books:
Ross Brunson - "Exam cram 2: LPIC 1", 0-7897-3127-4
Roderick W. Smith - "LPIC 1 study guide", 978-0-7821-4425-3
And I didn't try -anything- on Linux boxen. I didn't need to.
For LPI-2, there's only one real book and it's from O'Reilly. Unfortunately I don't know the full details and don't have them at hand either.
Just enter "LPI" into the search bar and read through the blog posts. You should be able to find some interesting stuff, including those summaries I wrote.
RE: Mac OS certification
I'm not considering it at the moment. Snow is not interested in such a certificate and I still have loads of other things to do. My priorities are BHV, LPI-201, LPI-202, SCNA for Solaris 10 and SCSA 1&2 for Solaris 10.
I did at one point in time consider getting the ACSA certs in my own time, but currently I just value my own time a little too much.

Thanks for the LPIC info.
Yep, The same with me regarding ACSA. It will be the ultimate. I saw that you need to do exams in two or three modules regarding the credits thet have (you need 7 credits to get ACSA).
Cheers,
Martijn

He dude,
I am running Parallels Desktop 3.0 now. Without any problems. I installed Windows XP in it for my router config software (Cisco SDM) and it runs fine. I am going to install Solaris 10 this week (hint: Install it with 512MB configured else the graphics will startup)..
Cheers,
Martijn
